Lightbulb soft focus

Could anyone help?
How do I make a soft focus effect in PP9?

ie blur the backgroud on a portrait image (forgroung)?

Graham,

Create a second layer of the entire image and apply the degree of blur you like. Erase through to the sharp layer behind it where you want to see full sharpness (eyes, mouth, etc.) You could also create a mask and use different shades of gray paint to let more or less of the sharp image come through locally.

The eraser tool and the layer mask are the two tools that are typically used for this, I believe.

Graham,

You could also make a selection around the 'foreground' area on the blurred layer suggested by Bill, feather the selection by a few pixels and press the Delete key to let the sharp image show through.

Duplicate the layer
Apply Gussian blur to this
Reduce opacity until you like what you see
