Mark,

>>tilt
>>tilted

These two just happened to catch my eye. I would have thought using letters twice was not allowed, although the rules did not say that specifically.

Does that disqualify you?

Just curious: did anyone think to look up what "discombobulate" meant? I've never heard it before, and while I now know what it means, I doubt it will be a word in my regular vocabulary.

Geoff,

You seem to be somewhat discombobulated; "tilt" and "tilted" happen to be from Alfred's list. Disqualification, though, seems to be quite an 'awful punnishment'. Maybe we should just subtract the two offending words...he worked so hard on the rest of the list.

Mark,

Generally, these types of puzzles require the letter to appear as many times in the original word as they do in any derivative.

Mike,

I understand. The list I posted was Alfred's PDF collection that had not yet been added to the main list. With the updated list I posted of 191, plus Afred's 97, (99 less tilt and tilted), there should be at least 288 words.

Lightbulb Re:discombobulate

Mark,

You're probably right. What I did was to take the original list I had compiled, added Alfred's and my additions, went through and culled double posts and used Excel to sort them. I might have missed a post or two, though - I did. I missed your 33. That brings the total to 282, after I took off five words that had already been posted.

I never would have thought that many words could be culled from the letters. In our daily paper, only one form of the word is allowed, all words have to be four letters or more (without adding an "S" and proper nouns are not allowed but even with these rules there would probably still be 200 words. Here's the latest list I have.

Awesome.

We used to use play this kind of word game when I was a kid. Helped me with my spelling it did since i refused to be outdone by my parents. LOL

I did lok it up. it is not in my concise OED (1964) nor an even older Collins. However it can be found in Encarta.
Can't remember what it means so you'll have to look it up

Walter,

I'm reminded constantly from within my family, if you want to know anything, look it up on the Net. I found the meaning at www.dictionary.com...and just now I found it listed in the World Book (Encyclopaedia) Dictionary which lists it as slang. That sounds like a good reason not to include it in my regular vocabulary.

Lightbulb Posted in the wrong place

{I originally posted the following message in reply to Mike Koewler's 'Updated List' post which gives the total as 254 words. At first I couldn't understand why his total had dropped from the 282 quoted further up the page, but when I looked at the timestamps of the two posts all became clear and I decided to move this one.}

I was planning to merge the lists myself, so it's nice to find that Mike and Mark have already done it. Thanks also to Geoff for spotting "tilt" and "tilted"; I found several others when checking through my list, so I'm surprised only those slipped through!

BTW shouldn't "Adulate", "Cob" and "East" lose their initial capitals, and couldn't Becky's "mod" shed its "(?)"? (JMO, YMMV, etc.)

[Edit: Walter's "combust" and "combusted" are words I probably wouldn't have thought of, but seeing them prompts me to suggest that "combustible" should be added to the list. Becky's "alude" is still in there (which she thought it probably shouldn't be) so if you substitute the total will be unchanged.]

Lightbulb Don't give up yet!

Firstly, although removing alude and replacing it with combustible left the total at 282, it should really be 280 because bobs and a duplicate disco are in there.

Secondly, in one of her posts Becky listed 6 words of which only limbo has been included so far. The other five were:
 cable
 limb
 lime
 sub

and the sublime
 sublime

which made me think of
 sublimate

To bring the total over the 300 mark, how about:
 bald
 baldest
 basic
 blamed
 blood
 bobtail
 busied
 busted
 coma
 costume
 double
 doublet
 doubt
 doubtable
 lust
 lusted
 mastic
 medic
 medical
 modulo
 modus
 muscle
 muse
 music
 musical
 salt
 salted
 sated
 seal
 seam
 stadium
 staid

Total 312 words.

Becky,

If anyone knows it, how about the name of the place in Wales that takes up a complete page of A4! That should give some scope!

Tel Boy

PS — I've been waiting for you to floor the opposition with the extra words in that Anagram program

You mean Llanfairpwyllgwyngethgogerochllantisiliogogogoch?

That, believe me, is from my schooldays memory so it's probably wrong! Isn't it officially called Llanfair PG these days?

Dave,

I could immediately see that you missed out "wyrndrobwll" from the middle, but I would almost certainly have misspelled some of the rest of it too if I hadn't looked it up!

Alfred

P.S. For the benefit of "Tel Boy", the attached PDF shows the name filling most of an A4 page.
