Default What is volume gain and pan?

Can anyone explain what volume gain
means? I can move the keyframes to where I want them, but I don't understand the stuff in the properties pane.
Also, when would you want to use pan? Thank you!

Try it and see.

Gain => Volume of sound
Pan => Move sound left or right
