I want to make a brochure-style website using the X5 I got from my hosting company. It all looks very complicated and I'm struggling to get started. Can anyone help with what I am sure will be the most basic of questions?

Welcome to the forum, always great to see a new user.

A good way to start for a general overview is to watch some of the Serif Webplus X5 videos here http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list...3&feature=plcp

If you have any specific questions, just ask and you'll find plenty of help from the regulars here.

Hi Rookery,

Welcome to the forums.

This is the place to come with all your web design questions, there are people from all around the world on here, from novice designers to professionals, who will be happy to assist in whatever way they can.

Sometimes looking at the included templates in WP & then deconstructing them can be a good start to understanding the basic layout of a website.

Create a test site that you can experiment on & then utilise what you learn in the real site you want to create.

If you see a site you like the look of on the net & want to do something similar, then just provide the link here & members will help you on the best way to achieve the same style.

Thanks. I picked one of the pre made templates and tried to remove some of the text boxes I dont need but couldnt. Next attempt was with a blank page. I put in a text box by mistake and similarly, cant remove it. Cant find out how to in help topics either. Not a great start.

Hi,

Sometimes a single click on a text box will not highlight the complete bounding box that surrounds it, click it again so that the whole box gets highlighted and pressing the del key should get rid of it.

You can also click the objects tab and what ever you click within this tab, will highlight on the page you've selected to edit and you can remove them from here.

Another option is to hold your left mouse key down and draw a box around the whole object you want to delete and then press the del key, becareful not to hit any other items though, as these will be deleted also, so this options needs a little more care and attention.

Also, somethings are on the Master Page and cannot be deleted by selecting it on the normal page, click the Master Page link above your normal site tree on the right hand side menu and this will open to show your master pages associated with the template you are using, now double click a master page so the eye icon appears, this tells you this is the page you are editing, you can now remove objects from the master page.

Thanks for the help so far. I've picked a template and have started to modify it. I want all the words to be in Arial style. Is there a way of making it all Arial as I type instead of having to change each section one by one? Thanks.

Check 'Text Styles', that could be the tool you need.

Good morningy

It would probably be helpful to you to open the left flyout to the how to tab for reference as you are learning WebPlus.

Select a text frame, go to the Text Styles tab, Normal is probably highlighted. Use the dropdown box and select Modify. Change the font and any other attributes.

By the way, the sans serif font, Verdana, was designed for easier reading on a computer screen.

Hope this helps.

Yes I know but I want it so that it always uses Arial rather than me having to change it box by box. Thanks anyway.

In the end, I have made my site by using a blank page and gone from there, adding stuff along the way. I've performed a site check and it comes up with a problem '<WBR> tags for hyphens will fail W3C validation'. I dont know what this means to me so dont know if I should click the fix button or not. What should I do?

scroll down to 'To change the default font for newly created text in all publications created in future'

As regards to your second post :-

WebPlus X5: <WBR> tags

As mentioned many times in other threads, well known websites fail W3C validation, Google included.

That's the settings for Page Plus.

In WebPlus X5 set the Default Text Settings in Text > Text Style Pallette then set defaults for future sites in Tools > Save Default Settings

Are the settings not the same?

Yes but what does it mean to me. The window says 'Apply this fix only if you wish to pass W3C validation, otherwise ignore this fix'. I've just read up a bit on the internet and it seems like I should apply the fix. Is this correct? Its my first go and I dont want to mess it up.

You can find many threads on this subject, here is one from 2008 :-

http://forums.serif.com/showthread.php?t=49460

I leave this option selected as validation is not important to me.

From the WebPlus Help:

Quote:
To allow a browser to insert a line break after any hyphen, WebPlus can optionally export a <WBR> Word Break tag after each hyphen instance. If this isn't a requirement, you can export text containing just the hyphen (without the trailing <WBR> tag)—this removes a source of HTML validation failures (since WBR tags are a Microsoft extension) but text with hyphenated words may overlap its frame boundaries.
If it concerns you - turn off the <WBR> in WPX5: File > Site Properties > HTML Output.

I do not suggest you apply the fix in the Validator.
