Default PagePlus X8 Wishlist

Now that PagePlus X7 has been released, here's a new PagePlus X8 wishlist. If there's anything you would like to see in the next release, please post here.

If there are any suggestions from the previous wishlist which didn't make it into X7, please feel free to repost them here if you'd still like to see them implemented in X8.

  1. Grid-fitting • In LibreOffice it is called “Register True.” What it does is fit the baselines of text to a grid so that the baselines of facing pages are aligned visually
  2. Running Headers • Headers change automatically to match the first or last heading on a page.
  3. Fix Double Line Styles • They are wider than their reported weight and double table lines do not connect accurately at the corners.
  4. Skewing Objects • As in DrawPlus
  5. Guidelines Improvements • Allow rotation of guidelines to any angle by using the shift modifier key. Double-click any guide to open the guideline setup dialogue. Ctrl Drag to copy a guideline. Support parallel guidelines with a variable spacing for use in floor-plans or maps. Move locked guidelines by holding down the Alt key modifier.
  6. Improve Quick Shapes • Quick Cogs looks nothing like a cog-wheel. Synchronising Quick Shapes across all Serif applications
  7. Improved Proofing and Spell-checking
  8. Writing Tools Studio Tab
  9. Improved Text Formatting • Disable hyphenation for the last line of a text frame. • Set justification limits for the last line of paragraphs. • Highlight loose lines • Glyph fallback • Format Title Case in all supported languages • Footnotes immediately below text • Index number when footnotes continued on next page • More underline styles.
  10. OpenType Feature Support for Asian Fonts
  11. Full screen Mode • Like PhotoPlus
  12. Hyperlink on Table of Contents text instead of page numbers
  13. Export Settings as Backup

Baseline grids.

Text should align not just across pages, but across columns too.

It's very disappointing that X7 still hasn't implemented this essential feature of DTP.

  1. Integral image captions (as part of the image frame), configurable as to which side it is placed.
  2. Image figure numbering which can be indexed.
  3. Integral ePub generation (Sigil et al can do it).
  4. Option of PDF placement as an image (choose page if multi-page PDF at linking/embedding), using the embedded thumbnail as its reference on-page.

Hi Mike,

What did you have in mind when you referred to integral ePub generation? Are we simply talking an editing mode where you can't do anything which wouldn't be supported in ePub format?

Andrew--Serif's own compiler into ePub, Mobi, etc. You wouldn't be held bound by Amazon's historically flaky compiler (not every version has worked properly as noted in their forum). Instead, Serif would control the process and it would not get a head of PP's programming.

But you do raise a point. What is it you think cannot be done with an ePub? Not the "ePub" format per se. But the whole field (fixed layout, HTML5 interactivity, etc).

There have been several queries about PDFs made for viewing on the web, or downloaded to view on your monitor, with the cover page centered by itself, and the inside pages shown two at a time, and the back page centered by itself. This is probably the most common PDF format for viewing on a monitor. Can PagePlus support this?

Is it an idea that the good people of Serif can make 1 list with all suggestions and that we (end users) can vote what we would like to see implemented?

In that way, it should be possible to see which features are wanted by the most users, so Serif can use that as input to see on which new features to work.

The way it works is that you quote and agree with things you'd like to see implemented. I agree that there could be an easier way of doing it, but repetition is currently the only certain way of getting the point across.

It can be done in the viewer, Geoff, but the point is that it is possible to set 'facing pages' view as the default for a PDF file.

We know that, TM.

Point is to be able to set that flag inside of PP when exporting to PDF, something that cannot be done.

A QR Code generator, I know its easy to do with Google, but it will be nice to be able to do it within PP.

Fixed layout is the key issue, but there are other things such as lines and fills which can't be directly supported by HTML. When exporting to ePub at present we throw up warnings in preflight and use rasterisation to get round some of the problems. If we were trying to create a mode just for eBooks I imagine the editing experience would be more like Word, with free-flowing text directly on the page and with restrictions on the options for lines and fills to ensure HTML compatibility. Big lump of work, of course, but I suspect some users would appreciate it.

What I did was to change the page size to custom and made it really long. This helped me remember the difference in layout for an ebook as opposed to a printed publication or a PDF.

And, speaking of PDF .... another thing I did was to use WebPlus for putting together an ebook, using it's drag down the bottom of the page to make it the needed height as the publication grew. Once done, I published it as a PDF and opened that PDF in PP X6 to create the ebook.

Have you tried other tools for ePublications? From making flowing ones (such as PP is capable of), to fixed layout and interactive ones?

How about just plain tables in PP going to ePub. You should find a thread by me if you look hard enough down some flights of stairs. Solving that solves a whole lot of other issues in the HTML produced for eBooks out of PP.

  1. PDFX-4 output.
  2. Ability to separate spreads apart for bleeds into the spine.
  3. Ability to have more than one page on one side of a spread to accommodate fold-out design.
