I use the built-in controls on the timeline quite effectively. If I need to alter anything else other than basic volume I use Adobe Audition. (Outrageous price but it's an amazing programme!)
It was bought from Syntrillium (£75) by Adobe who immediately tripled the price for an upgrade to their
"new" programme. Now it seems you can only buy it as part of an editing suite for video (over £900).
If you're rich buy it or look for it on EBay. Frankly I think Adobe prices are ridiculous.

Yes, Audition IS a terrific program but NO, it is most definitely NOT available "only.. as part of an editing suite for video.."
It CAN exist and be purchased as part of the Adobe Creative Suite 6, but it also exists as a free-standing program in its own right. And, despite its admittedly high cost (it was actually sold by Syntrillium to Adobe back in the late 1990s (I think)), writing as someone who has used every version of Audition since 1.5, once you're an "established/registered" user upgrades/updates are pretty reasonable in cost.
FWIW I think that "update" cost is worth every penny!
