Added a more detailed tutorial on Customising Keyboard Shortcuts (in PagePlus X5 format). It will open in PagePlus X4 too. It can be used as a template for your own keyboard shortcut assignments, to keep track of changes or to print out cheat sheets.

You can download my Customised Keyboard Profile. Save it in:

%AppData%\Serif\PagePlus\15.0\Accelerators\ and select it in Options, User Interface, Keyboard to give yourself a head start. I think you will need to replace the underscores in the file name with spaces.

Although it will also work in PagePlus X4, some of the keyboard assignments won't work as some commands were introduced in PPX5.

Added a tutorial on Headers, Footers, and Page Numbering.

I have recently been updating several long books using PagePlus X5, and the latest book ran to 260 pages, with lots of different running headers. I found a much easier way of doing this by promoting master page objects than I used in my previous books. It saves time and makes future editing much easier.

There is also a description of adding page numbering sections.

Brilliant! Thank you, Bhikkhu! I've always found headers and footers in long documents mystifying in PP.

I have added a new tutorial on Custom Borders.

Importing borders from PagePlus X3 or earlier and saving them for reuse in more recent versions. Creating and importing custom borders for PPX4 or PPX5. Using custom borders to create column rules.

The PagePlus X5 file (save linked content as) can also be opened in PPX4. The tutorial is not relevant for earlier versions of PagePlus.

Tutorials on New Review Site (Basically the same site, but recreated with WebPlus X5)

I have updated the tutorial on Customising PagePlus to include a section on modifying the style sheet for the HowTo tabs.

Most Serif applications that I have use the same default.css for formatting the HowTo tabs, so only one copy needs to be modified and copied to the appropriate folders. Keep a backup of the original, and of your modified style sheet since it will get overwritten if you reinstall or repair the software.

I have not been able to persuade Serif to enlarge their fonts, though this survey shows that "Verdana 9 pt is considered too small for body text by two-thirds of the respondents," so what can we say about Verdana 8 pt?

For older readers even 10 point Verdana is too small for comfortable reading, though 93% of readers in the survey thought it was "not too small." Ideally, the HowTo tabs need options for small (8pt), medium (10pt), and large (12pt) fonts.

Thank you BP for your efforts to make the How To more practical for many of the older users. I sometimes think that the youngish Serif staff fail to view things through the older generations' eyes.

Thanks again.

I uploaded a video tutorial to introduce PagePlux X5 - OpenType Features

The video has no sound — I have enough trouble just recording the mouse clicks in the right order To pause any YouTube video, just click on it. Click again to restart it.

I have updated the video with a new one. This has fewer errors, and shows a few more features. OpenType features can be applied via several different routes:
  1. Format, Character, OpenType, Alternates: Stylistic sets
  2. Format, Character, OpenType, Numeric: Fractions, Alternative fractions, Old Style figures, Ordinals, and other numeric forms.
  3. Format, Character, OpenType Capitals: Small Capitals, Petite Caps, All Small Caps, etc.
  4. Format, Character, OpenType, Details: this is the most comprehensive, and includes all of the above, plus any other OpenType features in the font supported by PagePlus
  5. Format, Character, Font: Fractions, Small Caps and Ligatures, Use OpenType features (if available). If fonts don't have OpenType features, this will use formatting methods.
  6. Text Context Toolbar, OpenType flyout: can be used to quickly toggle a few common features.

Have watched your latest tutorial on OpenType features several times before I could digest all the effort you put into it.. Thanks for a good insight into an area I'm not used to. So much to view and learn!

I would like to be able to pause between each of the demonstrations - there are so many of them and they all run quite fast, one doesn't know where to look especially on full screen which for me was to-he only way to view it.

Nevertheless thank you BP for a needed tutorial.

Hello, Bhikkhu:

You have done some wonderful (and very time consuming, I presume) so I guess it isn't best if I ask for a tutorial on BookPlus?

Regards,

Sparky

I never use BookPlus — it just makes life more complicated than it needs to be. See my tutorial on Headers, Footers, and Page Numbering. There is very little that cannot be done without using BookPlus.

I have added a tutorial on Adding Captions to Images.

This shows how to use endnotes (or paragraph numbering) to add automatic sequentially numbered captions to illustrations throughout a publication.

I have added a Tutorial for Creating Vertical Text that reads downwards. This is not advanced DTP, but it is a fairly frequent question, and its not easy to obtain good results.

Note: The post below by @MailTo and its attachment is for DrawPlus, not PagePlus. In PagePlus there is no need to disable the option to capitalise the first letter of sentences. Single letters will not be capitalised anyway after pressing return.

Thank you BP for the Creating Vertical Text tut; I must admit I use a slighty different way to align vertical text.
1/ In Options>AutoCorrect>Options I turn off 'Capitalize first letter in sentences if I don't want all capitals.
2/ Using Artistic text press Centre Align paragraph
3/ Drawn the first character
4/ Press Return
5/ Draw the second letter which appears centered, vertically underneath to first character
6/ And so on.
7/ It is also possible to change the font of each character to add to the variety of the vertical text.

As you say the exact line spacing can be adjusted in Format>Paragraph to suit the font.
