Default Backing up websites

I have two different websites on the same host.

One I maintain myself and the another is maintained by another member of our Club.

I have access to both and would like to back up everything on the host server but when I use MAINTAIN I am unsure how to back up to my hard drive and what actually to back up.

I also worry if I download a folder for example would this be removed from the site.

I have looked at the help but nothing about backing up.

Yes .. we have copies if the individual WPX4 files on our computers but just trying to understand what is important to back up?

Many thanks

Alexander

Hi Alexander,

There is no need to panic about downloading folders from the server and then thinking these will be removed, because they stay where they are. But you no need to do this because your entire site is backed up via the File > Save As from the menu of Webplus.

The only thing to consider is whether to leave all your content (images etc) linked (from folders on your hard drive when you build the site) or embedded (all contained within the single work file - name.wpp)

If you choose to embed all your content, it wont matter if images you use in your site from various folders get moved or deleted because they are contained within the wpp file that webplus creates as the site work file.

You can see what is linked and what is embedded by using the menu of webplus and select Tools > Site Manager > Resource Manager and look under the placement heading, you can change what you like from here.

If you do change any content from linked to embed, when you then close the resource manager down and then use the File > Save As - make sure you save the file out under a new name, this will at least give you an old workable copy (original file name) should the new one with all the content embedded get corrupted by over bloating of the file should the site be a big one with loads of content.

Alexander

I regularly burn my WebPlus files and associated site resources to CDs or DVDs so I have back-ups off of my main computers.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Mick for your comprehensive answer.

I can follow most of that and right from the start we have embedded photographs and pdf files as I understood this was the best way to go.

We also have both WPX4 files back up locally so covered. That of course is one file (which you say covers the program and all the data) but what confused me was looking at all the folders and individual files when I used the Maintain menu.

So I have it ... no need to download from the server as long as fully backed up locally, which we have covered.

Thanks again for peace of mind.

Thanks mjh

Between the advice of Mick and yourself I am sure myself and others will understand what is required for backing up.

My pleasure Alex, just remember to make regular backups of the work file (name.wpp) after each update and use NEW names for your files, possibily date related such as mysite-06-2012.wpp etc, this will always give you a little more peace of mind should a file become corrupt or unworkable and webplus refuses to open the file. It's not common but COULD happen, but you will have something to fall back on.

Thanks Mick ..

... and funny you should mention not opening as lately when I double click on my WPP file on my desktop the Wep Plus X4 opens but nothing loads. I then have to go File >>> Open ...etc and it opens.

I will now add the date to back ups as I normally overwrite in a Back Up folder.

Due to having so many different versions of Webplus on this machine Alex, I always either use the File > Open or open via the start up wizard which will list the last few files I've worked on.

I like you always had a blank screen when simply double clicking a wpp file.
