The Windows installer error 1638 almost always means that 'Another version of the product is already installed' or at least Windows thinks it is.

Goto Control Panel and check for another version and uninstall it - then re-boot the computer and try the install again.

If that fails you may have to resort to a tool like Revo Uninstaller

Or simply try the registry cleaner component of cCleaner

Ah ... an old forgotten version. That's done it ... thanks!

Have to say though that's it's a poor install process that can't notice an earlier version and at least notify the user.

It sort of did tell you - but's that's Windows Installer for you.
