Default PP and Pub?

Hi, I don't own PagePlus, but as I've just started working at a printers I've had to start using Publisher again. I've not used Publisher in about 12 years, so I'm having to learn it again (which isn't too difficult, just annoying). Can PP open/save Pub files? or any file format that could provide a means of transferring from one to the other?

The newer versions can. I suppose that would be one way of doing it...if I buy it. One thing I know for sure is I'm not buying Publisher

Only one way to find out.

Invest in PP X6, knowing it comes with a money back guarantee. After, checking the tools in the version of Publisher at hand.

Or, buy PPX5 for £20 and upgrade to PPX6 later if you need better indexing and/or ebook publishing.

See my review page for a comparison of features.

Although you can open a PDF with PP, once edited and resaved, you would not be able to open it again with Publisher as it cannot open .ppp or .pdf. Looks like you will have to use one or the other as neither are compatible. I'm often forced to use Publisher at work as some documents need to be used/edited by colleagues, but given the choice, I would take PP any day and always use it for work that needs anything more than basic layout.

I'd buy x6 straight away if i decide to get it that is. At the moment I'm not doing that much work from home, but if I start doing more then I'll get it.

This is probably something Serif should take note of and not just PP. More compatibility with other software, though I do understand it'd probably cost a lot to get access to the filetype. MS on the other hand wouldn't even consider making it handle PP files.

Hi Nick,

I don't think Serif should take a note of this at all, why should they?

All these software companies are in 'competition' with each other. Just as Serif would not want their PP files to be opened in MS Publisher, Microsoft would not want their Publisher files easily opened in PP either.

The answer of 'compatibility' was given above - go the PDF route. While PP opens PDF files ok (from reasonably any source, if not all) surely modern versions of Publisher can do likewise - if they cannot, then 0/10 for Publisher.

For $199 USD I can purchase a plug-in for ID that does a pretty fair job of opening Publisher files. Yep, $199.

File filters--the ability to open files from one format and usually save them in the host application's format--is an age old thing. Nothing wrong with the desire for a page layout application to open another page layout app's files.

I run into this type of need pretty often. I get files from all sorts of applications. In most cases I try to use the originating application through the whole process. When I need to put into something else, I just knuckle down and do it the old fashioned way.

If I was a printer today (and I have worked for a service bureau), it is a simple choice. Just use what the client has. It is the most economical means of a quick-turn and hence more dollars in the pocket at the end of the month.

However, then like now, I opt to create all work in what I feel is appropriate whenever I get to make that choice. I think the OP ought to consider doing the same.

Take care, Mike

Agreed Mike,

The print company I use gave up arguing the toss and has now installed PP on their system - they always prefer PDFs, but at times both having PP has helped enormously. And, surely, it doesn't overly cost these large companies to be 'compatible' with their clients - if the volume of work is there, it's worth it.
