Default wav files not recognised

Hi, I've used MP X5 and X6 to create various videos over the past couple of years and suddenly they have decided not to recognise WAV files. Some videos were of local bands gigs, and I imported seperately recorded audio from the sound desk as Wav files, and spent days getting them in sync with the visuals. Now I can't do any further alterations as (a) the files don't appear in the Media pane and (b) if I reimport the Wav files the icon appears with a crack through it and a message saying "No media streams found. Either this file type is not supported, or the file is damaged".
The files play ok in other players and other video editing software ie Vegas.
The waveform is displayed ok in the MP music track which is puzzling. Also if I try to rip tracks from an audio CD in MP it won't rip as Wav files but will as Wma???? Heeeeelp I,ve got loads of edits using Wav audio and can;t do anything with them!!***??~~!!!

Maybe you need to add codecs

Hi GD20, I got unlock codes from Serif to unlock codecs in MPlus which needed unlocking but it still wouldn't recognise wav files. I don't understand what's going on as I could edit movies quite happily using wav files on separate audio tracks. Even switching off then switching back on doesn't help this problem!!

I believe that WAV is a "container" format which can use a number of different codecs & settings.

Normally, WAV should be handled by MS Windows: I think that it should not use a Serif codec which needs "unlocking."

The first thing is to inspect one of the troublesome WAV files using a tool such as (free) Media Info. This should reveal which codec was used and the bit depth etc.

Also, have you recently installed anything which might have provided an alternative codec? This might have replaced the normal MS Windows codec and not be compatible with MoviePlus.

If you have not customised MoviePlus, eg. by customising export templates, you could consider resetting MoviePlus to its factory defaults. This is done by holding down the Ctrl key while starting MoviePlus.

But, you should "export" the codec unlock codes before doing this, in case they become reset to "locked."

Hi RichardS, thanks for your reply. It's all getting a bit technical for me, I remember when there was a choice of VHS or Betamax and a Kodek was something you took photos with!!
But apart from the frivolity, I see your point that wav is a container format. I downloaded Media Info and checked a file and it seemed ok, I'll attach a screen shot to see if you can see any problems. I have had problems with Win Media Player recently, It decided it didn't like playing videos or audio files and would just freeze, giving a not responding message. It would also affect the whole computer at times requiring me to use the reboot button. I decided to download Real Player and used that for a bit but it seems a bit erratic at times too, so I now use VLC as my default media player. Maybe this has screwed things up as you suggest, but it's only MoviePlus that has any problems with wav files.
I also reset MoviePlus but it didn't make any difference, still wouldn't accept wavs. (Come back tape, all is forgiven!!) Actually I'll email you the jpeg of the screen shot, can't figure out how to attach it here,
Cheers.

I suspect your problem may be related to WMP. Can you uninstall it and then reinstall?

Yes, most of the Windows codecs are installed by Windows Media Player. Microsoft also provides a downloadable tool for checking & correcting the standard MS codecs in WinXP.

I don't know whether something similar is available for Vista & Win7.
