That's a good idea... except: is there not an automated email where you have to click/follow the link already??? (essentially the same thing)

There are several free StarterEditions which they could download and register. I doubt if the spammers would bother, but it shouldn't deter genuine users.

Perhaps there could be a "Starter" forum in which anyone could post. That would at least stop spammers posting in multiple threads as they often do.

Yes, maybe that is so. There is a forum password, I seem to remember. (Having a password, that is, I don't remember my actual password!)

Reporting Spam:

If there is a post (or posts) that are obviously spam, but do not actually break any forum rules, but are, say, generic, vaugely (or not even) relevent to the thread, should we report them as spam?

I just did (which is why I'm asking), but technically, they are abiding by the rules, so it can't be "dealt with". I'm asking because Patrick made me think of it in another thread...

I believe we should report them. It's the moderators decision as to any action that is taken.

Yes, don't subscribe to threads until there is a more permanent way of stopping the spammers.

Just out of curiosity, would the following be possible ,or do you think it would cost Serif too much tom implement??? :

With your Google, Facebook, etc. accounts, you can set it to send you a text verification code before you log in. Could Serif set up a system where in order to register you have to receive a SMS verification code?

I know that not everyone has a mobile phone, but nowadays the vast majority of people have one, and (if it prooves to be cheapish) I reckon that it would virtually eliminate Spam...

Only human spammers have mobile phones. Much of the recent flood of spam (if not most of it) comes from bots.

Exactly. And even the "human" spammers, would they a) want to enter a personal contact number and b)go to the effort of entering the sms code?
(Of course the same can be said about genuine new users though...)

Well, something needs to be done. The forums have been nigh on unusable these past few days.

Neither Google or Facebook have or will ever have my mobile number. Guess I'd have to leave.

At least it would stop me spamming

haha

Yes, but existing members are safe from any new spam measures :p

No, I do see that many people wouldn't want to sign up using a phone number for verification But would it work if the "user" had the option to either receive a text or phone a number to get a code(whereby their phone can be on private)? Probably not really

Not relevant to serif, but anyway, how to report phishing and scam emails to a concerned bank.

I like to do my bit by taking to the banks a copy of any scam or phishing email together with a print out of the source code so they can pass it to their security centres.

Today I was given some email addresses such that I can forward such emails direct to the security centres.

If anyone in the UK is interested, here are the addresses for three of the UK banks:
Lloyds TSB : emailscams@lloydstsb.co.uk
Natwest : nwolb@natwest.com
Santander : phishing@santander.co.uk

Well, the perpetrators have awakened.

Got four about twenty minutes.

Sigh.

The spam does seem to be increasing

I assume that the user's IP address gets blocked as well as their account? If it is only the account they can just set up a new one...
