Default Menu design problems

After placing chapter points on my timeline and entering Menu design I get what appears to be a correct layout ...icons with corresponding correct thumbnails of video...so far so good, however when I go to preview to test same the remote arrow buttons do not work only the return and enter. Worse still no matter which icon I click I am taken to the start rather than the set chapter point.

Win 7 64 bit
Gigabyte MB
Capture HD 1080i

Have tried using Win XP with same results.

Yes - I'm having the same problem.

I have not made many discs with a menu, but I did recently make one with six chapters - and that worked ok.

My current project is behaving as you describle - eg click to play chap 4, and it starts from the very beginning of the disc ... and I cannot see any difference from the disc I made 2 weeks ago that worked fine.

Has there been any changes recently ?

Same here, in both X5 and X6. In fact, I can't move the highlight at all in preview mode. A Ctrl start didn't help. I rarely use MvP for authoring, but this is still a real nuisance. I'll try a repair and see if that helps.

Edit: A repair doesn't help. Still, I made an ISO file and that played correctly, including the menu.

Thanks MikeR, Seems the finished disk will be OK even though the remote simulation is defective.
Interesting X6 has the same problem
Rang Serif technical support who informed me X5 was too old to get phone support (bought it from them last week) and would have to upgrade to a newer version...X6 to avail of his help. Perhaps someone such as yourself, who has X6, could try them out on this problem?

Hi Brian,

If you bought X5 direct from Serif, you are entitled to 'installation' and 'product issue' support (as defined on this page) for 90 days from the date of purchase:

Mike, may I ask what do you use for authoring DVD's if you don't use MvP. I find the menu designer certainly misses out on certain issues.

I use Sony DVD Architect Studio. It takes a bit of getting used to, but is very flexible.

Hi Alfred,

As MPX6 has been released for quite a while would the following not override the cover you have copied to me.

Definition of a Fully Supported Product

A Fully Supported Product is defined as:

A current version of software published by Serif
The immediate predecessor of a current version of software published by Serif, but only for three months following the launch date of the current version

Hi again Mike,

Thanks for the link to the Sony DVD Architect Studio site, it's just what I was looking for to create DVD menus.

I'm still a huge fan of MvP X5 for my video editing but lets hope the designers add some more bells and whistles to its own menu designer.

It would be handy if the, 'bells and whistles', that are already in the program, actually worked as intended.

Hi Manc
Just experienced opposite to you.
Couldn't get designer to work as per my post with XP or Win 7 now it is behaving exactly as expected when running Win XP though still not in Win 7.
To the best of my knowledge nothing has changed re updates etc.
Can I trust this software ?

Hi Brian,

Apologies for the delay in replying. I've only just found your further post about this.

I don't think there's any conflict between the two statements. While the current version of a software product is less than three months old, the previous version continues to qualify as a 'Fully Supported Product'. As I understand it, this level of support includes Installation Support, Product Issue Support and Product Help:

Once the three months have elapsed, 'Product Help' ceases to be available for the previous version, but you still qualify for 'Installation Support' and 'Product Issue Support'.
