Default HD to DVD

I have a Sanyo Xacti that records at 1080i. The MP4 videos play just fine through the camcorder onto a big screen TV. However, after importing the video into Movie Plus X3 (MPX3) and then rendering it onto a DVD the video is very choppy. I am assuming that it is a byproduct of downgrade in quality as I take a high def video and transplant it onto a DVD that is incapable of HD resolution as well as a DVD player that is unable to read HD material. Is there a way to downgrade the video quality while it is still in MPX3 and still maintain a fluid video, just lose some of the sharpness? I am thinking that then I will be able to transfer it to DVD without all of the choppiness.
