Lightbulb using a file from DVD

Some children at the school I work at were videoed and it was shown on BBC this evening. I recorded it on my DVD recorder, transferred it to a DVD and I'm now trying to import it into MP5 to then edit and save as a MPG (and then aFLV Flash file)to put on the school website.
The DVD file is a VOB file ....the DVD plays on my computer but I can't get the file to play in MP5.....Is what I am trying to do possible?..any help appreciated.

Lightbulb Re:*using a file from DVD

sam,

I have asked a similar question tonight (see VOB help wanted). Depending on the size of the VOB file copy it from DVD onto your hard disk then drag that file onto the timeline. You should then be able to edit and save it.

Hope this helps

regards

John

Thanks John..I've tried that ....I have difficulty dragging the file onto the tmeline...and when I do manage it, it appears as a series of icons which are drawn broken.
I have checked in Options that VOB files are supported and have checked the Codecs box is ticked.

You could try using a different CODEC to decode the VOB. I've often found that MainConcept worked better than Roxio with VOBs.

To do this right click on the VOB in the Explorer pane and select MPEG Codec.

Thanks ffor the advice......tried that....got in touch with Serif and they suggested downloading k-lite....tried that....still not able to do it, so I got a programme to convert my VOB file to a MPEG file......but still would like to be able to import the VOB file into MP5....maybe I should offer to send serif the file.
Also when I looked at the VOB file in MP5 in the explorer pane , and I clicked on the magnifying glass to find codec, each time the programme crashed.

Lightbulb Re: using a file from DVD

A friend recently advised me to download and install the Vista codec package http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multime...-Package.shtml.

It works under XP too and solved several of my problems. No idea if this will sort your problems as I don't have MoviePlus installed currently.

Alternatively, try re-encoding the .vob from the DVD using DVD Shrink http://www.afterdawn.com/software/vi...dvd_shrink.cfm or use DVD43 decrypter http://www.dvd43.com/ with your favourite copy program i.e. Nero.

Cheers,
Mark

Lightbulb Re: using a file from DVD

I am beginning to think that the problem with the application crashing mey be size related. VOB files can be very large and perhaps require more RAM than I have - 1gb. I also get the same crash when using large MPEG files stripped from a VOB, if I split it into smaller pieces MP seems to work. I may of course be completely wrong.

Does anybody know if more ram would solve the crash problem
